Camwell Personal Film No. 53: Last Passenger Train Blaenau Ffestiniog - Bala

Heavy clouds as the last passenger train makes its way to Blaenau Ffestiniog, with double headed panniers make light work of a heavy train

Dark days, heavy clouds and rain seem appropriate for Last Passenger Train events and 22 January 1961 was no exception. The weather gets progressively worse as we travel from Ruabon to Corwen, Bala and eventually on to Blaenau Ffestiniog for the last time. The two Great Western pannier tanks seem to make light work of the significant eight coach train behind them. Many people turned out for this Stephenson Locomotive Society special, with coverage even making it to the BBC's Railway Roundabout programme.

Amateur film from the Camwell collection showing steam trains and stations around Britain. The last passenger train from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Bala on 22 January 1961 is seen, a Stephenson Locomotive Society special trip. Crowds of people are on the train and platforms and wave at the train as it goes by. The film is quite dark in places. Stations seen include Ruabon, Corwen and Bala.
