The Ballot Box Not the Bomb

The Ballot Box Not the Bomb

This poignant public information film from Northern Ireland publicises elections for a new Assembly.

This public information film from Northern Ireland feels rather poignant in hindsight. It was funded by the UK government for showing on TV to publicise elections for a new Assembly. Though informative about the voting system, it treads gingerly across the minefield of Ulster politics. Anxious not to cause offence, its studied attempts at neutrality feel likely to have got everyone's backs up.

DOCUMENTARY. A record of the last few days before the elections on June 28th
1973 for a New Assembly in Northern Ireland. Reflects the attitudes of
proportional representation and shows candidates campaigning. Includes Brian
Faulkner, Stanley Morgan and Gerry Fitt on the importance of the ballot box
in the election.

It shows what an important role television and speaking to voters play.
It shows police/ army presence to ensure that everyone can vote freely.
Shows how people vote. Jimmy Jones, chief electoral officier talks about
how the new voting system is working. Voters are asked for their opinions.
