Weymouth hosts Olympic-style sailing event (Westward Diary)

Weymouth has a long tradition of hosting Olympic-standard sailing competition; watch an international field compete for supremacy.

Australian, British, Canadian and French sailing boats take to the sea in this film that depicts Olympic-style maritime competition off the coast of the Dorset port of Weymouth. The footage includes competitors preparing their boats on the beach and in race action.

This sailing competition in Weymouth and Portland, held in May 1976, was a few months prior to the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Canada, where the sailing events took place at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour, Kingston on Lake Ontario. Weymouth and Portland became the sailing venue for the 2012 London Olympics.
