The East Anglian Film Archive, the UK's first regional film archive, offers a unique record of the East of England's social and cultural history. As part of the University of East Anglia, we continue to lead moving image heritage research and inspire audience participation through community projects and events. Our collections represent a broad range of amateur and professional creativity, from 1896 to the present day.

Last ship launched at Rowhedge Shipyard

This 16mm black and white silent film is a copy taken from the original 9.5mm print captured by an unknown amateur filmmaker of the last ship to be built at the Rowhedge Shipyard, and launched to a gathered small crowd in 1962. The shipyard, which was situated on the River Colne, was in operation since 1904 as The Rowhedge Ironworks Ltd and closed for good in 1964, during which period it constructed some 900 vessels. The site of the yard is now occupied by a housing development.
