R.A. King flying, Freshfield Aerodrome, Southport

A fascinating glimpse of the early days of aviation here, as intrepid flyer Robert Arthur King takes to the air in an alarmingly flimsy aircraft. Freshfield Aerodrome was the grand name for a long stretch of sandy beach on the Lancashire coast that was ideal for pioneering flyers. The following year, King would land on another beach - at Blackpool, after circling the town's landmark Tower.
