A Trip to Lynmouth

In 1938 holiday pay became statutory leading to many working families taking holidays together. The rise of the motorcar and the railways also made coastal retreats popular with visitors from the major urban centres. After the onset of war in 1939 and the evacuation of children to the countryside, family holidays were rare and such happy days did not return until the 1950s.
