Shows: Pentyrch, Wenvoe & District, Brecknockshire

At the close of the summer: horse, agricultural and flower shows for Pentyrch, Wenvoe & District and Brecknockshire.

The shows must go on, even as the summer wanes, and the Pentyrch, Wenvoe & District and Brecknockshire are held in September, drawing crowds with their turnips and trophies, bulls and boats, egg and spoon races on horseback and Taffswell Radio, with its “service that satisfies”. R G Iles, filming on behalf of The South Wales and Monmouthshire Agricultural and Horse Shows Association, gathers footage of the summer activities to edit and screen in winter.

Reginald George Iles, who worked in Imperial Tobacco's Bonus Department in Cardiff, was a founder member of The South Wales and Monmouthshire Agricultural and Horse Shows Association and moved from the city (Cardiff) to the country (a farm near Cowbridge) just before Christmas 1948. The show season, which the association inaugurated, played a key part in his life, not least because his two daughters were passionate about ponies, competing in various show competitions, and went on to become horse breeders.
