Get Cracking
Bad eggs and cracking jokes put a frown on Hitler's face in this advert for National Savings
This WWII propaganda short encourages audiences to leave Hitler with egg on his face - by buying National Savings Stamps. Wartime expenditure made the government increasingly reliant on the scheme that was collecting up to £5,000,000 a week in 1943. Posters often played more to patriotism and the future of the next generation, but this cinema short goes the humour route with exploding eggs and a frowning Fuhrer.
A German officer cracks open a bad egg and accidentally breaks a portrait of Hitler on throwing it away. The commentary urges public to "get cracking" with National Savings stamps. Trustee Savings Bank and Post Office Savings Bank books - they're what they're cracked up to be, claims commentary. (50)
