From the collection of

East Anglian Film Archive at the University of East Anglia
The East Anglian Film Archive, the UK's first regional film archive, offers a unique record of the East of England's social and cultural history. As part of the University of East Anglia, we continue to lead moving image heritage research and inspire audience participation through community projects and events. Our collections represent a broad range of amateur and professional creativity, from 1896 to the present day.

The Village Around Us

Scenes of village life in Chipperfield, Herts, where on the village green is a cricket match, and at the school gates, mums collect children.

Amateur filmmaker Mr P. R. Aves, a member of the Institute of Amateur Cinematographers, captures on Super 8 film scenes of the everyday life of the village close to where he lived. The village in question being Chipperfield in Hertfordshire.

The Two Brewers Public House stands opposite Chipperfield Common, and on the edge of the common, on the village green, a cricket match takes place. The Old School has been converted into flats, and at the new school, St. Pauls, the mums wait at the gate to collect their children. All the usual landmarks that make up a village are recorded, including the butchers, shops, church, and pubs. A lovely record of village life in the late seventies, early eighties.
