The Ceramicists

What passions burn behind doors in Downpatrick? Enjoy a tale of two unknown artists who have both found something they can truly call their own.

Discover the sheer pleasure of mastering a skill. With his gentle pace and easy manner Charlie Witherspoon evokes the humble passions of two amateur ceramicists in County Down. Enjoy a mesmerising demonstration of the potter's wheel by building contractor Bill Taggart and learn the secret to his patterned glazes. Then travel down the banks of the River Coyle to meet miniaturist Alison Gilford. Will Charlie recognise a familiar face amongst her miniature portraits?

These rushes are from Spectrum, a fortnightly programme on Ulster Television that brought Northern Irish arts matters to a local audience for half an hour from 1971-1988. This material is courtesy of the UTV archive.
