A Newton Abbot Councillors in stocks (Westward Diary)

Lock Stocks and Barrel. A local councillor locked in the town stocks

Local councillors in Newton Abbot have given their time to raise money for charity at the Town Fete. Sitting in stocks in the town centre they are bombarded with tomatoes and doused in water by none other than swimming star Sharron Davies.

Sharron Davies is at the height of her swimming career having just returned from the 1980 Moscow Olympics with a silver medal in the 400-metre individual medley. Born in Plymouth, Devon, she was coached by her father Terry and set a record for the British national team at the age of only eleven. She won two gold medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Davies is a TV personality and swimming correspondent and patron of Disabled Sport England.
