As part of the University of East Anglia, we continue to lead moving image heritage research and inspire audience participation through community projects and events. Our collections represent a broad range of amateur and professional creativity, from 1896 to the present day.

Donkey Derby

Race cards at the ready for an afternoon of Donkey Derby at the Thorpe Hall Meadow at Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex in 1969.

On a Saturday afternoon in August 1969, Clacton Cine Club member (and three times Chair) Joan Hammond records the local Donkey Derby held on the Thorpe Hall Meadow at Thorpe-le-Soken. Side attractions include a Punch and Judy show, games including ‘knock a girl out of bed', hoop-la, and coconut shy, and a competition to smash a piano to pieces.
