Alexandra Day: Queen Alexandra Drives through London Topical Budget 148-2

On 26 June 1914 thousands of pink imitation roses were sold on London streets to benefit local hospitals. Topical Budget's camera was there to catch a glimpse of Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII, and mastermind of Alexandra Rose Day. The scheme raised the equivalent of millions of pounds in today's money, becoming a model for other modern fundraising initiatives like the poppy appeal.

Appropriately, the newsreel added some rose-pink tinting for the opening intertitle - a neat way of showing support!
