Association International: Scotland V Ireland Topical Budget 913-2

Home team stunned as Scotland turn on the style at Windsor Park.

Ireland's final game in the 1928-29 Championship would prove a miserable end to a thoroughly dispiriting campaign. They were soundly beaten by a rampant Scotland, with prolific striker, Hughie Gallacher, inspiring the visitors. The 7-3 defeat ensured Ireland finished bottom of the table, whilst the triumphant Scots would go on to defeat England 1-0 in the final group match and claim the title.

Although, on this occasion, it was Scotland's Hughie Gallagher who took the plaudits, Ireland also boasted a goal-scorer of distinction in Joe Bambrick. Bambrick scored two of Ireland's goals on the day, but is perhaps best remembered for scoring six goals for Ireland v Wales at Celtic Park on 1 February 1930, in a 7–0 win. It remains the record score for a British Isles player in an international fixture. Bambrick also scored Chelsea's goal in their highest-attended competitive match at Stamford Bridge. A crowd of 82,905 watched the 1-1 draw with local rivals Arsenal on 12 October 1935.
