London Transport’s Victoria line included a number of novel features, including the first automatic ticket gates, with magnetically encoded tickets, developed in-house by the signal engineering team. This short film shows two alternative designs for the gates, and records passenger flow, which was calculated to be up to 30 people per minute. Trials of the new gates began at Stamford Brook in 1964, and the Victoria line opened in 1968.
