A Family Called Abrew

Meet the Abrews, a unique showbiz family whose imprint on British culture began in Scotland in the 19th century

The achievements of the unique showbiz family are celebrated using rich archive material, including footage of family members in supporting film roles alongside Paul Robeson and intimate fireside-style testimony. The existence of Black British communities before Windrush is foregrounded, with insights into the Abrews' imprint on British culture beginning in 19th century Scotland.

Highlights the unsung contributions of black British people active in the worlds of boxing and music hall during the early 1900s. Uses oral testimonies, archive footage, and a soundtrack which features music from the period to chart achievements in these fields which emananted from members of one particular family: the black Scottish music hall artiste Lotte Abrew and her family, notably her brother, the Scottish Heavyweight Champion that racism left uncrowned.
