On the Bread Line at Kennedy's Bakery

Join the production line in Kennedy's bakery to find out what makes J. B. Kennedy's bread hard to beat, quite a treat and good to eat.

Take a tour and watch Kennedy's bakers work their magic. Batch bread gets its name and loses its crusts from the process of sticking batches of the unbaked bread together, baking and then tearing into individual loaves afterwards. Bread wasn't the only thing baked in the Beechmount ovens. On Christmas Eve instead of the aroma of baking bread, you could savour the smell of Christmas dinner, as J. B. Kennedy would use his industrial ovens to cook turkeys for local residents.

This film comes from the collection of National Museums Northern Ireland. Keen amateur filmmaker Hugh Kennedy took this footage of his father J. B. Kennedy's Bakery in Beechmount Avenue.
