Building of Kennedy's Bakery Extension

Witness a pivotal moment as bread vans begin to take over from horses in the battle to deliver Belfast's bread.

A busy construction site symbolises a new era for Kennedy's bakery, that of the bread van. Up until World War II Belfast's bread was delivered by horses who lived in stables behind the Bakery. Scaffolding and brick walls fly up as the builders quickly assemble a garage to house the new motor bread vans that will ultimately replace their animal colleagues. Curious bakers dressed in white come out to investigate the builders' progress.

Keen amateur filmmaker Hugh Kennedy took this footage of his father J. B. Kennedy's Bakery. The new extension was opened on the feast of St Joseph The Worker (May 1st) with a celebratory Mass for all the workers and their spouses.
