S.S. Saxonia in Liverpool (1901)
All ashore! Passengers disembark and crew offload after a long Atlantic crossing.
The Cunard ship SS Saxonia made her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Boston in May 1900. The passengers here would have been returning from Boston, or from Queenstown in Ireland, the only other stop. As often in Mitchell & Kenyon films, we can detect staging by the filmmaker: as the mail is unloaded, one young sailor grabs a crate marked 'fragile' and casually throws it to his mate on the quay.
Main (replacement) title (00.04). Passengers walking down a walkway from the
ship (unseen) with hand baggage. They walk to camera along a landing platform,
some ship's officers standing by to acknowledge their departure (00.28). Dock
or postal workers going up and down steps into the cargo space fetching sacks
[post?] which are piled inside the hold (1.11). Passengers disembarking down
steps watched by some cargo handlers (2.09mins).
Note: The Cunard line ship `Saxonia' was launched at the John Brown shipyard,
Clydebank, Scotland on December 16th 1899. Fitting out continued until mid-May
when she set out on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Boston on the 22nd May
1900. The passengers may be returning from a voyage to Boston.
