Canoeing at Bickleigh Bridge

Canoeing on the River Exe and under the stone Saxon Bickleigh Bridge

Canoeists compete in troubled waters under Bickleigh Bridge. Today the River Exe is known for its canoeing and the Canoe Loops are a series of self-guided circular canoeing and kayaking trails. The head of the River Exe starts at Simonsbath on Exmoor and joins the sea at the Exe Estuary beyond Exeter.

The East Devon bridge was thought to be the inspiration behind Art and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water which topped the charts in 1970 and featured on the album of the same name. The pair had travelled around Devon in the 1960s. However the rumour was dismissed in 2003 when Art Garfunkel appeared on Radio Devon to state that the line came from a gospel church hymn.
