Jazz hands and jalopies aplenty, as the Roaring Twenties reach even the remote corners of Surrey's North Downs

Newland's Corner and Hog's Back Hill offer some of the most spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs. But for these visitors, the county's pastoral pleasures seem a mere backdrop for a touch of flapping and a jalopy joyride. Newland's Corner hit the headlines shortly before this was filmed, when Agatha Christie's car was found abandoned here during her mysterious 11-day disappearance in December 1926.

The man behind the camera was Samuel Augustus Smith, a music shop owner from Salisbury and keen amateur photographer. His rare use of the professional 35mm film gauge captured greater detail than most amateur film at the time, and this transfer from the original negative gives us a high quality, joyful snapshot of 1920s leisure time.
