By the sixties more intensive farming methods coupled with a growing demand for meat domestically saw the introduction of boiler chickens from America. Broiler chicken farms were able to meet the demand by the selective breeding of broilers because this breed grows very quickly to a marketable size.

Broiler chickens, or broilers came from the USA and are bred and raised specifically for meat production. There are breeder broilers and meat broilers. Broiler chicken farms frequently come into question over stocking density with a consumer led push for more regulations encouraging humane treatment. The time from hatching a Broiler chick to a broiler reaching the supermarket shelf has more than halved since the sixties.
