Where there's drama behind every door...
The Liverpool-set soap opera began its 21-year run in 1982, as part of Channel Four's opening day's schedule. The brainchild of Phil Redmond, creator of BBC children's series Grange Hill, Brookside aimed to "reflect Britain in the 1980s", as Redmond put it. In its first decade the serial explored such contentious themes as unemployment, trade unionism, juvenile delinquency, drug abuse and rape.
It frequently found itself the subject of tabloid outrage, notably at its (short-lived) early use of swearing, for its 1986 rape storyline and for featuring British television's first lesbian kiss in 1994. But the serial's focus on social problems was a direct influence on the BBC's EastEnders.
Brookside served as something of a training ground for Liverpool talent, with actors Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston and writers Jimmy McGovern and Frank Cottrell Boyce among those going on to greater success and acclaim.
