Charity Shop Sue | Part 1 | Sec*hand Chances

Charity Shop Sue makes her chaotic debut in this blend of sharp humour and workplace absurdity.

The first episode of the YouTube mockumentary series Charity Shop Sue follows Sue Tuke (Selina Mosinski), manager of Sec*hand Chances in Nottingham, as she invites a local filmmaker into the shop to document the chaos of daily life with her volunteers Vera, Kersch and Viki.

Released in 2019, this independently produced series quickly became a cult hit online, and its lead character took on a life of her own as an unlikely social media superstar. It’s no surprise: Sue rules the shop floor with dramatic flair, clashing with staff and customers alike. She is as charming and funny as she is manipulative and blunt, keeping both her team and customers on edge.

Nottingham-based twins Matthew and Timothy Chesney and Stuart Edwards created, wrote and directed Charity Shop Sue together. Check the credits – or keep your eyes peeled for cameos in later episodes – and you’ll see Midlands megastars Vicky McClure and Shane Meadows lending their support, but the success of Charity Shop Sue highlights how digital platforms such as YouTube have created spaces for independent comedy to thrive.
