Burgh of Falkirk Royal Visit

Burgh of Falkirk Royal Visit

Parting is such sweet sorrow - especially if it's your first visit from a new King. Falkirk waves hats, hands and hankies at George V.

How many hands does a royal shake in the course of their reign? Events like this one reveal the pomp, pleasure and palm pumping involved in a visit by the King. Gathered around the Burgh building on Newmarket Street, the desire to be seen by George V, four years into the job, (and the camera?) leads some enterprising types to balance their hats on top of sticks and jiggle them around.

The film was probably commissioned from a newsreel company by the local Burgh - a form of local government in Scotland and Northern England that was abolished in 1973. The dais was mounted in front of the Burgh buildings (still standing but not in municipal use). The additional footage of the car at the tail end of the film is a bit of a mystery. Could it even be an off-cut from an early ancestor of Top Gear?
