Portrait of Petworth

Petworth, ancient and modern, is seen in this film from the early 1970s - where picturesque buildings, lanes and dainty gardens endure increasing amounts of passing traffic.

This interesting film hints at Petworth's growing problems with road traffic. Approaching from the south, we see St Mary's Church, Lombard Street and the Town Square, as well as traffic snaking through the one-way system. A plethora of road-signs add to the visual clutter. Next we see a new housing development south of the town centre with views of the school and the Fire Station. Finally, we move to Petworth House with views of its grounds, designed by Capability Brown.
