It's a New World
Early attempts at inclusive swimming for disabled people.
In the swim of things: the benefits and techniques of disabled swimming. Produced for the Amateur Swimming Association, this is a 'train the trainers' exercise. It makes a virtue of its very low budget, delivering information frill-free with crystal clarity. Where a film easily beats a 'how-to' manual is that it can show exactly what it's talking about - which makes all the difference when its very subject is mobility. An early attempt at promoting inclusive sports and leisure for disabled people.
Demonstrates methods for teaching disabled swimmers, and outlines the physical
and mental benefits to be gained from the activity. The film is divided into
clear sections, marking different teaching points: firstly, the methods for
accustomising young children to the water are demonstrated; the teaching of
older children then makes up the main section. It provides a detailed example
of a Lesson Plan, demonstrating entry into the pool, breath control, buoyancy,
recovery to safe breathing position, body awareness, games and awards, and
exits. The final section looks at the particular experiences of people with
various conditions: brittle bones, congenital deformity, paraplegia,
tetraplegia, arthrogryphosis, cerebral palsy and spina bifida; and shows some
medal-winners in swimming from the Disabled Olympic and Commonwealth Games.
