Catching the Milk Thief

A tramp helps himself to a farmer's milk in this knockabout Victorian comedy

A tramp helps himself to a farmer's milk in this knockabout Victorian comedy from the Yorkshire-based Bamforth stable. As is usual in early films of this kind, the thief gets his comeuppance - though the violence of the retribution seems out of all proportion to the crime. Unruly tramps were something of a staple of Victorian film comedies - not least in Bamforth's films.

COMEDY. A country yokel is seen sleeping beside a box labelled "Nestle's Milk" on which is perched a milk churn. A tramp creeps up and starts drinking from the churn and is promptly tackled by the yokel. Two passersby run up and join in. The tramp is pushed into a wheelbarrow and trundled away with the two men trying to tie his hands with string.
