Stormy weather hits the South West

South West battered by storms

High tide and stormy weather combine to soak Torquay sea front. The Penn-Ar-Bed Morlaix ferry arrives in Plymouth and discharges its passengers and rain running off the moors swell the rivers increasing the risk of flooding. The River Avon Dam on Dartmoor in Devon shows the extent of the run off of rain which has fallen heavily following storms after a long dry summer.

The River Avon or Aune as it is also known rises on Dartmoor and travels through South Brent Avonwick, Aveton Gifford to Bigbury and Bantham in the South Hams. The estuary lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is part of the South Devon Heritage Coast.
