Irrigation in India
A group of civil servants journey through Amritsar, Haridwar and Varanasi on a tour of irrigation installations in India
Little is known about Colonel Webb but his film appears to show an official tour by Europeans - likely British civil servants - of irrigation installations in north and central India. Starting in Amritsar in the Punjab, they travel to the holy city of Haridwar in Uttarakhand. As well as snapshots of rural life, there are stunning scenes along the banks of the sacred Ganges as the group apparently follow the river south through Uttar Pradesh to Varanasi (then Benares). We see the famous ghats, scene of ritual bathing and cremation for Hindus, and glimpse what may be the Gyanvapi Mosque.
