The Wardrobe

The Wardrobe

A fun minimalist cartoon with a delightfully absurd logic, from the director of Yellow Submarine

Even IKEA don't build them like this... This stripped back cartoon takes a delightfully absurdist approach to time and space. Is it a wardrobe, a stairwell, a doorway, or just a box? The Canadian George Dunning came to England to run a UK branch of the famed American UPA studio. When they shut up shop he stayed and set up TV Cartoons with John Coates, making commercials, off-beat art shorts like this, and in 1968 The Beatles' animated feature Yellow Submarine.

Cartoon: a man takes off his shoes and climbs into a wardrobe, Another man appears, tries to communicate, and finally steps into a wardrobe; noises; the first man climbs out wearing another pair of shoes, leaving the second man with the old pair.
