National Blood Service: Chief Executive's up-date, November 2001

Video presentation to staff by Martin Gorham, Chief Executive of the National
Blood Service. Covers news in four main areas:

1. Donor-related activities, including recent television advertising with
celebrities whose friends and/or family have benefited from the NBS, and
internal training video for staff at the National Contact Centre

2. Hospital-based activities

3. Internal activities - processing and testing

4. Staffing matters, including results of staff survey.

Two issues of particular concern are ensuring the NBS's preparedness in the
event of a September 11-type incident, and the occurrence of variant CJD and
its possible effects on blood supply. NBS considering the development of a
screening test for CJD. Will wait to see whether this would affect the donor's
willingness to supply blood.
