W.G. Grace Filoscope Film

W.G. Grace Filoscope Film

ACTUALITY. W.G. Grace and Prince Ranjitsinhji walk past the camera on the
occasion of the First Test between England and Australia, at Trent Bridge,
June 1-3, 1899.

Note: This was W.G. Grace's twenty-second and final Test appearance for
England. The film was probably taken on the first day of the Test - the
production company is not known, but Barry Anthony suggests the Sheffield
photographer Jasper Refern. The film was originally converted into a
filoscope `flickbook', and re-photographed onto 35mm film by the NFTVA. The
resultant `dot matrix' image is not that of conventional film. For details
of the filoscope, see John Barnes, `The Beginnings of the Cinema in England',
pp. 107-8 passim.
