Politics - What Should We Do? was a Granada schools programme exploring politics for secondary school and further education students. This 1978 episode repurposed material from Nuclear Waste in the Irish Sea, a 1976 edition of the British current affairs show World in Action. Studio presenter Bill Grundy, a World in Action veteran, places the question of how we deal with nuclear power's radioactive byproducts into the realm of civics.

The series aimed to encourage political literacy in its young audience by emphasising the realities of issues that were likely to affect them. It poses the question; is the public is informed enough to make democratic decisions about nuclear science or must it necessarily be left to technocrats? Lessons from the USA suggest that scientific assurances should be questioned.

But while a large-scale dump exists in the Irish Sea, and the seabed is contaminated, whether it represents a public health hazard is less clear. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food warns that 'we are only looking at today's danger today'. Will the durable radioactive contaminants remain contained, or might they be disturbed and remobilised by storms and waves? Time and tide will tell.
