The 1979 European Election was the first open to a public vote but, coming only a month after a British General Election, voters showed their lack of interest by staying at home on election day. The Cotswolds seat, incorporating large parts of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire, was one of the largest and, with a candidate already well versed in Euro-shenanigans, the Conservatives had it all to lose.
