Ulster Image

Behind the headlines, the real Northern Ireland

Examining the legacy of the past and its enduring impact on Northern Ireland, Ulster Image details the advent of The Troubles and explores how depictions of the country have shifted over time. The film seeks to address misconceptions and reveal the true Ulster, as it is experienced by the majority of its inhabitants.

Archie Reid was a prolific filmmaker based in Ballyclare. Amongst the contributors to Ulster Image are Terence O'Neill (Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, 1963-69) and the politician, William Craig. The artwork, a caricature of well-known political figures of the day, is the work of celebrated artist and cartoonist, Rowel Friers. This material is courtesy of Mrs Elizabeth Reid and artwork appears with the permission from the family of Rowel Friers.
